Move Live Tour: Derek and Julianne Hough: A Review

I decided to attend the “Move Live Tour” featuring Julianne and Derek Hough. They are the talented brother and sister act that are from “Dancing With the Stars.” Julianne used to be a dancer on the show,  but stepped up to be a judge last year.

I love watching Derek each season, but it’s something else to watch Julianne dance with him. It’s a treat to watch him masterfully dance with professionals. It reminded me of the Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire movies.

Julianne is as good as he is, and she has a fantastic voice.

Their show sold out the Palace Theater in Columbus, Ohio which holds hundreds of people. The audience was primarily women of all ages, sizes and shapes. During the show the Houghs kept engaging the huge audience, and made it feel like we were a part of the show. They even got the crowd up on their feet to dance.

Derek and Julianne started the show coming out on their huge staircase set, music playing and lights flashing.  The set changed with each number. They had a group of talented dancers accompanying them who were just as limber, energetic, and easy on the eyes. There’s something refreshing about youthful energy.

The show went from traditional to modern dancing. They even did a few dances emulating Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. They also shook their booties in a most entertaining way. The skill and artistry was present throughout the show.  My favorite duet with the Houghs was a dance they did on “Dancing With the Stars”. (If you’re a viewer, it was the dance done with the children imitating their dance moves.  ( They did it without the kids in this show, but it was still terrific.)

Toward the end, Julianne sang some great ballads wearing unique costumes. One of my favorites was a dress that lit up with all kinds of lights and reflected back and forth between audience and the stage.

During parts of the show, Derek came out and shared some pieces of advice. I suspect it was while they moved around the set and changed costumes.

My favorite was when he said, ” if you don’t feel confident with a skill go out and try it. You may not be great, but you will get better. If you wait and wait  you won’t get better.”

The show lived up to its name, and kept moving. If it’s coming to your town, go see it. You won’t  regret it!

Season 14 Dancing with the Stars: Final: A Winner Declared!

Donald Driver

Donald Driver (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The Season 14 cast opened up the show with a very exciting dance.  At first, I just thought it was only  the pros. It looked great. It was a chance for them to take a final bow. Very impressive!

Everyone agrees that the dancing in this season was the best ever.

Finalists were wearing pink and black costumes.

Brooke, the host, was wearing a gorgeous pink dress. It was connected with some kind of buckle thing.  I’ve noticed her boobs haven’t popped out of her dress since I mentioned it on my blog. You think she read it?

The judges wanted to see Donald Driver and Peta do their freestyle again. It was another session of him throwing her around like a football. It made me nervous. What if he dropped her? This girl is one tough cookie.

Here are some comments from the judges about the finalists:

“Donald is like a gladiator coming out to do battle.”
“Katherine has technique.”
William Levy has great charisma.”

Huge photos of William Levy, Katherine Jenkins, and Donald Driver were on the DWTS set.  There are spotlights all over the room.  There was palpable excitement.

What follows are some highlights of the show. Former cast members got a chance to show their stuff.

Review of the show
Sherrie Shepherd  looks like she lost a few pounds.
She dance to a ridiculous song I’ve never understood, “It’s Raining Men.”
I enjoyed Sherrie’s dance with 6 sexy male pros. They lifted her up, still no small feat.

We were then treated with highlights from the season. How soon we forget the other contestants.

Kelly Clarkson gets to sing! You know, Kelly, the first American Idol finalist.

Brooke went to check out the 24-hour dances they all had to put together the day before the final. She talked to William Levy and Cheryl who were wearing snazzy costumes. She asks provocative questions like, “Are you nervous?” .

Martina was wearing a very cute dress, and looked pretty feminine, She did a good job dancing.

Jack Wagner was wearing a black outfit, and he danced competently.  He looked feminine too. (Sorry Jack, for some reason I don’t like you. You must remind me of someone.)

Gladys Knight—did a great job dancing wearing a very cool red outfit.

Melissa Gilbert—Good dance with Maks and his brother.  Roshon did a great dance wearing a nice blue outfit.

Williams Levy —Great last dance, the salsa, all the shaking in the right places. He is something.

As Carrie Ann said, “true star quality.” His little boy said, “ I love you daddy.”  Cheryl, his partner, said, “He was a true talent, and he challenged me.” Final Score: 89/90

Katherine Jenkins and Mark
“I’ve loved every minute of it,” said Katherine. Here last dance was a jive.
Adorable  50‘s orange outfits to “splish splash I was taking a bath on a Saturday night,” an old Bobby Darin song. (Some of you may be asking who? Look it up.)
Such a cute dance!

Carrie Ann: “You two set the bar so high.” She gave Mark credit.

Len: ” I tell you Katherine, you’re the complete package.”
“Thank you for making me so welcome in America.”  Donny Osmond told her, “If you win it, believe me, It’s worth it.” Final Score: 90/90

Donald Driver
Peta thought Donald was a great partner.
Cha cha cha
They were both wearing pink costumes. Peta looks good in her skimpy outfits.
Donald took his shirt off!  He  gave it to Carrie Ann. He is as good a dancer as anyone, and he obviously works out.
Len: “You’re the best footballer we’ve ever had.”
Bruno: “Always inspired.”
Carrie Ann: “You’re the one to beat!”

I think it will be Donald Driver. 89/90

His little kids, very adorable, said, “Daddy we love you.”
The beefy teammates told him not to drop the ball because he was almost at the end zone.

Before the announcement of the winner, Gladys Knight sang a tribute to the finalists, “The Way we Were.” She was wearing a beautiful sequined black dress.  She sings much better than she dances. They showed the finalists in a big montage on a huge screen while she was singing. .

3rd place: William and Cheryl. His little boy is crying, Aw!
2nd place:  Katherine Jenkins and Mark
Winner:  Donald Driver is the winner! Honestly, it was no surprise to me, and I wrote this as I watched it.

He was presented with the Mirror ball or is it Miraball?

Until the 15th season, goodbye Dancing with the Stars

Please comment on the results. What do you think?

DWTS Extradordinary Final

Tonight was a treat. They were all fantastic! After it was over, I called up and voted for all of them. I did give some extra votes to two of my favorites which shall remain private.

They all revisited dances that they didn’t get high scores on during the season.

William Levy and Cheryl
During the Cha cha Sheryl wore a colorful dress, and William wore a sexy pink shirt.  What rhythm, grace, and sexuality!
After the dance, red and green paper exploded like fireworks. Well deserved.
Len: “Good  as I’ve ever seen in 14 seasons.”
Bruno:” Intoxicating Cuban cocktail.”
Carrie Ann:” You’ve grown miles, and that’s what this show is about!”

They got a perfect score from the judges

Freestyle

They took big risks.” I know from my life…from the biggest risks, the biggest rewards come, ” said William.

Cheryl was wearing a gorgeous red dress, and William was wearing a black outfit that showed off his muscular body.
There were great lifts and shaking. I thought it was a wow!
Len: “I liked the lifts and the tango, but it was too predictable…  you just shake your butt!. He did have a bit of a point. The other judges didn’t agree and gave him 10’s.
Final score
59/60

Katherine Jenkins and Mark
Paso Doble
She was wearing a  beautiful black and red dress and Mark was wearing a cool matador outfit. They were in perfect sync. They were of equal talent; she is like a pro.
Bruno: “Lustrous artistry, shapes extended beautifully, technical brilliance.”
Carrie Anne:” Primo!”
Len: “Very satisfying, fabulous.”

Freestyle

Mark says she’s a most versatile dancer, so he choreographed a dance that had her transitioning between the dances: Jive, Quickstep, Lindy Hop, and Tap.
I liked her white flapper costume.
She sang a little at the beginning and she sings like she dances.  She is a classical singer, don’t forget.
Her dancing is really terrific.
Bruno: “Fast and flamboyant, so much content, on the money all the way through.”
Carrie Anne:” You have the range of motion, and the dance of a champion.”
Len: “If I’m asleep and dreaming, don’t wake me up. This is a freestyle. ”
She had fun!
60/ 60

Donald Driver and Peta
Argentine Tango
He shows a certain power and toughness. Peta’s blue outfit was almost indecent, but she can wear it. Her next costume for the freestyle was even more sexy, a little 2 piece green outfit.
It was a smoldering dance
(I don’t know how his wife sitting in the audience can take it.)
Carrie Ann: “Crisp”
Len: “It needs far more content. Lifts are great, but you were a tad careful. You could have gone on it a little bit stronger.”
Bruno: “Very clever: subtle and intimate: small in the detail. Strong storytelling.”
Donald Driver said, “Len,I don’t want to know what I have to do, but on the freestyle I promise you, I’ll give you a 10.”

Freestyle

He’s from Texas, and knows how to country dance. During rehearsal Donald kicked Peta accidentally . So, she had bloody lips, big deal.  She’s as tough as he is!

It was perfect: He was throwing her all over the place like she weighed nothing at all.

Why is his family is wearing cheese on their heads is beyond me? If you know, let me know!

Carrie Anne:” I loved it.”
Len:” fantastic!”
Bruno:” I can’t resist a ride in the wild  dress. Country inspired triumph!” (Don’t you love Bruno’s critique’s?)

Donald did what he promised, and got a 10 from Len.

I liked them all so much I voted for all of them!

What inspires me about this show is how they all take criticism gracefully, and then go back and improve their dances. You can tell that’s what they all do in life.

Who do you think is going to win?

My bet is Donald Driver, but anyone of them could be a winner.

Semi-finalists in DWTS Announced!

Maria Menounos at the 81st Academy Awards

They announced the semifinalists for Dwts’s last night. Poor Maria Menounos got the boot. I was sad because I love to watch her partner, Derek dance. I really thought she showed great improvement. Maybe she got eliminated because of her bizarre laugh. I can’t really think of another reason. During the season, she really won me over.

Features in the Semi-final show
I  enjoyed the dance sponsored by Macys. It was a dance to The End of Time by Beyonce. Two pros Chelsie and Tristan danced together. Wow!

Fans chose the costumes. It was a sexy red costume for Chelsie, and black costume with red stripes for Tristan. It was a wonderful dance, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

At the end , Chelsie  stood on a box, and air blew up her skirt  . If you’re a baby boomer you will know it was reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe in “Some Like it Hot.”

Alanis Morissette also sang during this show. Her jeweled guitar was unique.  Some dancers dressed in white did an exquisite dance. They portrayed people in love. Nothing like the art of dance to express love.

Julianne Hough, Derek’s sister, was featured in a promo for Rock of Ages, a new movie coming out. It also featured Mary J.  Blige. I can’t wait to see this movie. I guess it helps to have Ryan Seacrest for a boyfriend.

If that wasn’t enough, Carrie Underwood was also featured. I like the kind of country she sings. To me, it sounds like a cross between country and rock.

Next week is the finals: William Levy, Donald Driver and Katherine Jenkins will be vying for the grand prize, a tacky looking trophy, the Mirror Ball.

I’m betting Donald Driver wins because everyone loves football. I would like Katherine to win. I like William Levy too. Who wouldn’t?

I can’t wait!

DWTS Semifinals: It was also sad story night, and I loved it!

DWTS had something I really love on their semi-finals tonight—stories.  All the stars shared a little piece of their lives with the audience.

William Levy is from Cuba, and lived in a ramshackle house. He didn’t get to come to America until his step-father got in some kind of trouble in Cuba, and the family was forced to leave. William worked hard for his family in Cuba, and has done the same in America.

Levy became famous by knocking on a modeling agency’s door. He is a big star in Latin America, and I’m sure he’s going to be a big star here.

He is proof that the American dream can still happen. It doesn’t hurt that he’s very easy on the eyes, and seems like a sincerely kind person.

He did an excellent tango, to “Sweet Dreams are made of these.” I would say he is one sweet dream come to life.

His second dance, a Samba, was just as sensational.

Levy does know how to dance, and move.

Donald Driver’s  story was about growing up really poor in Texas. You can’t get much poorer than living in a U-Haul under a bridge with a single mother and 4 siblings.  His father couldn’t help out the family because he was in prison.
His mother was forced to send him and his brother to live in Texas with his grandparents. To be accepted in their neighborhood you had to sell drugs and be a thug. He didn’t give this up until college when he met his wife, and she told him it was her or the drugs.

After college, he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers, but wasn’t the best player on the team. He worked hard to be the best. All his teammates like Driver and it’s easy to see why. His optimistic attitude is inspiring.

Now, he’s a star football player,  and he has a terrific wife and 2 little adorable kids.

He did a very elegant waltz, and a very quick perfect quick step. Driver can dance too, and has charisma.

After hearing that story, you can’t help but root for him. He also thanked his mother, and wife. He obviously knows how to play politics, and get the ladies to vote for him.

Katherine Jenkins is from Wales, and has been singing since she was 4. They showed her singing opera, and she has a fabulous voice. Not only is her voice great, but she dances like a pro. Oh, and she’s beautiful too. Too complicate matters she seems really sweet. Piers Morgan put in a plug for her during the show.

Her sad story is that somebody she was engaged to publicly broke up with her in London where she lives. To me, this story is not sad at all . Why marry a man who is not right for you? If you don’t want your life lived out in front of the public, don’t become famous. Don’t be beautiful and talented.
But if this is a dancing competition, she really should be in the semi-finals. My guess is that she’s going to be the one eliminated. Her story is not too sad, and women do watch and vote more than men.

Maria Menounos’ parents were immigrants from Greece. She used to accompany them to their janitorial jobs they did to make a good life for their kids in America. Beautiful Menounos was a beauty pageant winner, and used to appear on Channel One as a newscaster. Maybe the people who watched that show will keep her in the competition. She works for Extra, a gossipy TV show.

Her boss said she was kind of a “klutz”. (I’m glad I don’t work for him!)  She has danced beautifully from the start. The judges gave her a perfect score tonight. She deserves to be in the competition. The judges highly rated her. She is giving most of the credit to Derek. (One of my favorite pros)

I think it’s too bad any of these terrific dancers have to be eliminated. I have really enjoyed this series of Dancing With the Stars.

Any comments? Feel free! Who is your favorite?

My predictions were right: Find out why Melissa and Roshon went home!

This week, the stars did two dances. The second dance was with a third partner. Like a classic fantasy. Tomorrow they’re eliminating 2 of the stars.

Donald Driver: Did a flawless dance. This guy is super talented.
Second dance: jive with 2 girl dancers . Fantastic and musical.
Total score 55/60

Maria Menounos Viennese Waltz. It was a  beautiful waltz and  everyone loved it. Len wanted to see them do a little more.
Second dance: 2 guys and Maria It was a Samba.
Samba – Bollywood type dance from India: I’m betting Len isn’t going to like it!
I was right! He didn’t like it!
Total score: 53/60

Melissa Gilbert fox trot —a few awkward moments for Melissa. Carrie Ann: liked it. Judges pretty much liked it. I was surprised.
Second dance: Maks and his brother―Samba  Maks and his brother are fun to watch!
Judges thought it was her best dance. I Agree!
Total score: 51/60

Katherine Jenkins Viennese Waltz She’s a wonderful dancer, and it’s flowing very well. She’s too gorgeous. Carrie Ann was a little critical. Maybe she’s jealous! They brought back Tristan to help on the second dance.
Second dance: Cha Cha—Looks like her pants got caught on her heels! She got rid of it masterfully!
Total score: 55/60

Roshon Fegan–  Viennese Waltz His grandmas both came to the rehearsal, and one was giving him a lot of advice. She is obviously where he gets his dancing talent from. It was precious (They were pretty old for such a young guy! ) He’s such a good dancer. He looks perfect to me!

Second Dance: Paso Doble: They brought in a guy to help with the dance. He looks like he’s as good as the pro helping with the dance. Len liked it!
Total score: 56/60

Grandma’s were in the audience crying with joy at judge’s evaluations! Len said, “good job dog.”

William Levy and Cheryl― Fox trot   He has charisma, good looks and dance talent. He’s my favorite. As Len put it, he has “flair.” He got a perfect 30!
Second dance: Paso Doble: He played a Perfect Zorro. “I used to watch it as a little boy in Cuba.” They brought in another male pro to help. I thought it was wonderful.

Judges disagreed! He lost some timing! So they gave him 9’s instead of 10’s.
57/60 Highest score in the night!

I don’t know how they’re going to eliminate two of these great dancers!

Who do you think is going to go! I say Melissa and Roshon. (The public doesn’t like Roshon and Melissa is the weaker dancer, but she does have fans! )

The results are in: There were some scary moments. It almost seems liked Melissa’s fans would send Katherine Jenkins home, but it was all a ruse. I think DWTS weren’t telling the truth when they said Katherine was in jeapordy!

I’m betting the winner is going to be hunky man: William Levy. What do you think?

Dancing With The Stars Final offers Inspirational Story: Richard “Steelo” Vasquez

DS boxshot

I waited to watch the DWTS final a day. I didn’t know the results, so it was a surprise. I expected Melissa Gilbert to go, but it was one of my favorites, Jaleel White.

Not only do I like Jaleel’s dancing, but I like his persona. First of all, he doesn’t take himself too seriously. He seems like a really good guy. And his dancing is pretty terrific. How else could he have played Urkel?

But, what really touched me was this week’s “AT & T’s Spotlight Performance” featuring Richard “Steelo” Vazques. He was a top B-boy dancers before he suffered a brain aneurysm in 2011. He lost the ability to walk and speak.

After spending six months in the hospital, he now spends his days going to physical rehabilitation. They showed him recovering, and it was almost too pathetic to watch. He was in a wheelchair, wearing a helmet and  learning to function again.  It took him a year, but he was debuting on “Dancing With The Stars”.

Somehow, he managed to get himself together to make a debut dancing with his group the Groovaloos. He came out 2/3 of the way through the performance. He was on a lit box. He looked terrific, no helmet.  He did some difficult steps. How inspirational. His wife was in the audience crying with joy.

Why is it some people have that inner strength to overcome all odds? Someone who is willing to work so hard is truly inspirational!

Do you have anyone who inspires you? If you have a story to share,  please do.

DWTS Classical Week: It brought me real joy!

Hofball in Wien. Aquarell, 49.8 x 69.3 cm

This week Dancing With the Stars had classical week. This is exactly what classical music needs. Making  this fabulous music  relevant to today, and that’s what this episode of DWTS did. They also added 18 musicians to the Dancing With the Stars orchestra. Harold Wheeler, the orchestra leader, seemed so happy to be the conductor for the night!

The show opened up with Joshua Bell playing a tune from Vivaldi’ Four Seasons. In case, you aren’t a classical devotee, Bell is one of the best violinists around these days. The professional dancers dressed in really cool 18th century type costumes. It was very artistic.

Katherine Jenkins was the first contestant up, dancing the rhumba to The Canon in D by  Pachabel. wow! style and elegance!  She was wearing a gorgeous grecian urn type costume. The judges love this woman with good reason. She is the most talented dancer, and she is a professional opera singer.

Melissa Gilbert and Max danced the Argentine Tango. They danced a great dance to Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro. Exciting way to bring out the music. The judges thought there were too many lifts. I thought they were wrong, wrong, and wrong!

Jackie Evancho is a young prodigy opera singer. She did an unbelievable job singing Ave Maria  for a Viennese Waltz. William Levy did a masterful job dancing to the song. Not only is he great looking, but he moves in an elegant way.

Roshon Fegan Did a tango. Great job! Carrie Ann gave him a hug. She liked it.

Donald Driver did a  Viennese Waltz. Vittoria Grigolo, an opera singer, sang! Driver has a work ethic, and did a great dance.

Maria  Menounos did a Paso Doble to Montagues and Capulets . It was very dramatic I loved Maria’s gorgeous red dress, and her fangs. (She was a vampire) Wow, Fabulous ! She was convincing vampire! Bruno said, she was  “Queen of the damned was the queen of the night.” PERFECT 30

Jaleel White In the rehearsal Jaleel comes across as a really nice guy. Did a competent Viennese Waltz. I liked it. I A beautiful  song I Made the Most of Loving you. Judges liked the story he conveyed, but not his technique.

They put the dancers on teams to get some extra points for each of them. More Vivaldi for Team Tango. They were up first. They were wearing very cool black and white costumes. It was so entertaining! 27/30 They got 27 points added to their individual scores.

Team Paso They did the Paso Doble. Danced to Carmina Burana  It was dramatic! They had all the muscle men together. They did a neat thing with their capes. It was absolutely beautiful! “Fire and ice,” said Len. 26/30 He had that right. I enjoyed this Dancing With the Stars

Maria was first and Melissa was last! We’ll see who gets the shaft tonight!

Any comments? There must be some devotees of this entertaining program.

Dancing With the Stars Motown night is a winner!

Smokey Robinson and The Temptations were featured guests. They brought me back to the good old days. They alternated singing their famous songs while couples danced. They both sounded just the way I remember them. I felt 16. How about you?

Gladys Knight did a competent job. She has real class, and this is the best she’s done. You could tell she was remembering that she is a star!

I thought Roshon Fegan did a classy job, but the judges didn’t agree. What do they want? Geez!

Maria Menounos She’s a terrific dancer and lived up to her other dances tonight. The judges liked her too.

Katherine Jenkins  did an expert job. Almost a triple score. She looked perfect. I’m starting to be so jealous of her. Beauty and grace. It’s just not fair. Oh, and she’s an opera singer too.

Don Driver Don kept his shirt on this week. Surprise! This guy looks great when he dances. Len gave him a big compliment. He told him he “exploded.” Len sees him as becoming a great dancer. Apparently, he doesn’t follow football, and doesn’t know he already picked a career. Don is frustrated because Len hasn’t given him a 10 yet!

Melissa Gilbert did a  Viennese Waltz. Half-pint looked glamorous and beautiful in her green gown. I thought she danced beautifully. She looks like she’s got a thing for Maks. Bruno thought she has a thing for Maks too. Who wouldn’t? They gave her 8’s. One of them should’ve given them a 9. Give me a break.

Jaleel White  did a Cha Cha Jaleel and was in his element. He reminded me of the old Erkel. He was sharp and precise. He showed what a great dancer he is. I hardly noticed Kim this time, and she’s a terrific dancer. Len said, “You’re back.” Bruno “Biggest sizzler of the season” Carrie Ann” A Game. Jaleel’s mom was all excited.

William levy  Smoky Robinson sang. Levy did a Rhumba. OMG this guy looks fabulous just standing still. He did a lot of shaking and gyrating. Not the best dance moves.

Carrie Ann said, ” On Behalf of all the women, thank you, but not enough dancing” Len said, “ On the raunchy side.” All right! I agree with Len and Carrie Ann.I suspect Bruno is a little in love with Levy. Who can blame him?

Smokin' (Smokey Robinson album)

Smokin' (Smokey Robinson album) (Photo credit: Wikipedia

Smoky Robinson sang “Tears of a Clown.” Two pros did a great dance to it.

All the dancers did a Cha-Cha Motown dance marathon They were all very entertaining in their colorful costumes, and sexy moves. Gladys and Tristan were the first to go! Boo, age discrimination. William Levy came in next to last. He moved his feet this time, and even slid across the floor! Katherine and Mark won.  They earned 10 points.

Dancing With the Stars is the most entertaining show on TV. Agree or disagree. I’d appreciate your comments.
