I Used to be Fat: TV Review

I Used to Be Fat

I Used to Be Fat (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Sometimes, I really like to watch those weight TV shows. They seem to motivate me. I really would like to take off some pounds. Like everything else, you have to work at it.

I watched a teenage oriented show on MTV entitled I used to be Fat. The young woman on it had been fat all her life.

When we meet her parents, and family we understand why. Although I do believe some people have a tendency to put on weight, the environment plays just as big a role.

They have all the creamy bad stuff in their pantry and refrigerator. Several different types of pancake mix, creamy stuff, and generally bad. They all put it in a big sack to give to the food pantry. (I suppose it’s not okay for them, but okay for the poor.)

Anyway, this young girl has a trainer who is merciless on her. The first day she is running across the football field. When she’s done with that, she’s going up and down the stairs of the stadium. ( I think he could have just had her run back and forth across the football field on her first day.)

Her father, who is overweight himself, tried to motivate her. He obviously cares about her, and that’s a good thing. I think it’s the case of the pot calling the kettle black. I think it would really motivate her  more if he was earnestly trying to take off some of his bulk. It looks like he’s making a half hearted attempt.  Her mother seems to be out of the picture. She does take responsibility for her kids being overweight.

The trainer and father point out that losing weight is a mental exercise. She keeps saying she can’t, can’t, and can’t. Finally she starts saying, “yes, I can.” (Sound familiar).

There is one scene where she goes to a restaurant with her brother and friend. They order all that bad stuff that they serve in restaurants:  hamburgers, french fries, and fried food. They seem to enjoy taunting her with it. She orders a salad, but you know those restaurant salads, some of them are loaded with hidden calories. At least she’s trying.

Finally, she manages to run a marathon, and succeeds. She goes off to college, and after about 3 more months she’s lost 79 pounds, and looks like a different person. (She could’ve picked a more flattering outfit to show off her good points.)

Her parents at the reveal still look pretty overweight. That was a disappointment. It means she’ll go back to the same lousy food environment when she comes home.

This program reminded me that losing weight is such a mental exercise, and that negative self talk is such a defeating thing. If you can find some determination, you can change things for yourself. (Even if you’re over 60)

Even thought this show was about a teenager, I still found it full of good information. It’s things I knew, but needed to be reminded about.

Season 14 Dancing with the Stars: Final: A Winner Declared!

Donald Driver

Donald Driver (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The Season 14 cast opened up the show with a very exciting dance.  At first, I just thought it was only  the pros. It looked great. It was a chance for them to take a final bow. Very impressive!

Everyone agrees that the dancing in this season was the best ever.

Finalists were wearing pink and black costumes.

Brooke, the host, was wearing a gorgeous pink dress. It was connected with some kind of buckle thing.  I’ve noticed her boobs haven’t popped out of her dress since I mentioned it on my blog. You think she read it?

The judges wanted to see Donald Driver and Peta do their freestyle again. It was another session of him throwing her around like a football. It made me nervous. What if he dropped her? This girl is one tough cookie.

Here are some comments from the judges about the finalists:

“Donald is like a gladiator coming out to do battle.”
“Katherine has technique.”
William Levy has great charisma.”

Huge photos of William Levy, Katherine Jenkins, and Donald Driver were on the DWTS set.  There are spotlights all over the room.  There was palpable excitement.

What follows are some highlights of the show. Former cast members got a chance to show their stuff.

Review of the show
Sherrie Shepherd  looks like she lost a few pounds.
She dance to a ridiculous song I’ve never understood, “It’s Raining Men.”
I enjoyed Sherrie’s dance with 6 sexy male pros. They lifted her up, still no small feat.

We were then treated with highlights from the season. How soon we forget the other contestants.

Kelly Clarkson gets to sing! You know, Kelly, the first American Idol finalist.

Brooke went to check out the 24-hour dances they all had to put together the day before the final. She talked to William Levy and Cheryl who were wearing snazzy costumes. She asks provocative questions like, “Are you nervous?” .

Martina was wearing a very cute dress, and looked pretty feminine, She did a good job dancing.

Jack Wagner was wearing a black outfit, and he danced competently.  He looked feminine too. (Sorry Jack, for some reason I don’t like you. You must remind me of someone.)

Gladys Knight—did a great job dancing wearing a very cool red outfit.

Melissa Gilbert—Good dance with Maks and his brother.  Roshon did a great dance wearing a nice blue outfit.

Williams Levy —Great last dance, the salsa, all the shaking in the right places. He is something.

As Carrie Ann said, “true star quality.” His little boy said, “ I love you daddy.”  Cheryl, his partner, said, “He was a true talent, and he challenged me.” Final Score: 89/90

Katherine Jenkins and Mark
“I’ve loved every minute of it,” said Katherine. Here last dance was a jive.
Adorable  50‘s orange outfits to “splish splash I was taking a bath on a Saturday night,” an old Bobby Darin song. (Some of you may be asking who? Look it up.)
Such a cute dance!

Carrie Ann: “You two set the bar so high.” She gave Mark credit.

Len: ” I tell you Katherine, you’re the complete package.”
“Thank you for making me so welcome in America.”  Donny Osmond told her, “If you win it, believe me, It’s worth it.” Final Score: 90/90

Donald Driver
Peta thought Donald was a great partner.
Cha cha cha
They were both wearing pink costumes. Peta looks good in her skimpy outfits.
Donald took his shirt off!  He  gave it to Carrie Ann. He is as good a dancer as anyone, and he obviously works out.
Len: “You’re the best footballer we’ve ever had.”
Bruno: “Always inspired.”
Carrie Ann: “You’re the one to beat!”

I think it will be Donald Driver. 89/90

His little kids, very adorable, said, “Daddy we love you.”
The beefy teammates told him not to drop the ball because he was almost at the end zone.

Before the announcement of the winner, Gladys Knight sang a tribute to the finalists, “The Way we Were.” She was wearing a beautiful sequined black dress.  She sings much better than she dances. They showed the finalists in a big montage on a huge screen while she was singing. .

3rd place: William and Cheryl. His little boy is crying, Aw!
2nd place:  Katherine Jenkins and Mark
Winner:  Donald Driver is the winner! Honestly, it was no surprise to me, and I wrote this as I watched it.

He was presented with the Mirror ball or is it Miraball?

Until the 15th season, goodbye Dancing with the Stars

Please comment on the results. What do you think?

Semi-finalists in DWTS Announced!

Maria Menounos at the 81st Academy Awards

They announced the semifinalists for Dwts’s last night. Poor Maria Menounos got the boot. I was sad because I love to watch her partner, Derek dance. I really thought she showed great improvement. Maybe she got eliminated because of her bizarre laugh. I can’t really think of another reason. During the season, she really won me over.

Features in the Semi-final show
I  enjoyed the dance sponsored by Macys. It was a dance to The End of Time by Beyonce. Two pros Chelsie and Tristan danced together. Wow!

Fans chose the costumes. It was a sexy red costume for Chelsie, and black costume with red stripes for Tristan. It was a wonderful dance, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

At the end , Chelsie  stood on a box, and air blew up her skirt  . If you’re a baby boomer you will know it was reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe in “Some Like it Hot.”

Alanis Morissette also sang during this show. Her jeweled guitar was unique.  Some dancers dressed in white did an exquisite dance. They portrayed people in love. Nothing like the art of dance to express love.

Julianne Hough, Derek’s sister, was featured in a promo for Rock of Ages, a new movie coming out. It also featured Mary J.  Blige. I can’t wait to see this movie. I guess it helps to have Ryan Seacrest for a boyfriend.

If that wasn’t enough, Carrie Underwood was also featured. I like the kind of country she sings. To me, it sounds like a cross between country and rock.

Next week is the finals: William Levy, Donald Driver and Katherine Jenkins will be vying for the grand prize, a tacky looking trophy, the Mirror Ball.

I’m betting Donald Driver wins because everyone loves football. I would like Katherine to win. I like William Levy too. Who wouldn’t?

I can’t wait!

DWTS Semifinals: It was also sad story night, and I loved it!

DWTS had something I really love on their semi-finals tonight—stories.  All the stars shared a little piece of their lives with the audience.

William Levy is from Cuba, and lived in a ramshackle house. He didn’t get to come to America until his step-father got in some kind of trouble in Cuba, and the family was forced to leave. William worked hard for his family in Cuba, and has done the same in America.

Levy became famous by knocking on a modeling agency’s door. He is a big star in Latin America, and I’m sure he’s going to be a big star here.

He is proof that the American dream can still happen. It doesn’t hurt that he’s very easy on the eyes, and seems like a sincerely kind person.

He did an excellent tango, to “Sweet Dreams are made of these.” I would say he is one sweet dream come to life.

His second dance, a Samba, was just as sensational.

Levy does know how to dance, and move.

Donald Driver’s  story was about growing up really poor in Texas. You can’t get much poorer than living in a U-Haul under a bridge with a single mother and 4 siblings.  His father couldn’t help out the family because he was in prison.
His mother was forced to send him and his brother to live in Texas with his grandparents. To be accepted in their neighborhood you had to sell drugs and be a thug. He didn’t give this up until college when he met his wife, and she told him it was her or the drugs.

After college, he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers, but wasn’t the best player on the team. He worked hard to be the best. All his teammates like Driver and it’s easy to see why. His optimistic attitude is inspiring.

Now, he’s a star football player,  and he has a terrific wife and 2 little adorable kids.

He did a very elegant waltz, and a very quick perfect quick step. Driver can dance too, and has charisma.

After hearing that story, you can’t help but root for him. He also thanked his mother, and wife. He obviously knows how to play politics, and get the ladies to vote for him.

Katherine Jenkins is from Wales, and has been singing since she was 4. They showed her singing opera, and she has a fabulous voice. Not only is her voice great, but she dances like a pro. Oh, and she’s beautiful too. Too complicate matters she seems really sweet. Piers Morgan put in a plug for her during the show.

Her sad story is that somebody she was engaged to publicly broke up with her in London where she lives. To me, this story is not sad at all . Why marry a man who is not right for you? If you don’t want your life lived out in front of the public, don’t become famous. Don’t be beautiful and talented.
But if this is a dancing competition, she really should be in the semi-finals. My guess is that she’s going to be the one eliminated. Her story is not too sad, and women do watch and vote more than men.

Maria Menounos’ parents were immigrants from Greece. She used to accompany them to their janitorial jobs they did to make a good life for their kids in America. Beautiful Menounos was a beauty pageant winner, and used to appear on Channel One as a newscaster. Maybe the people who watched that show will keep her in the competition. She works for Extra, a gossipy TV show.

Her boss said she was kind of a “klutz”. (I’m glad I don’t work for him!)  She has danced beautifully from the start. The judges gave her a perfect score tonight. She deserves to be in the competition. The judges highly rated her. She is giving most of the credit to Derek. (One of my favorite pros)

I think it’s too bad any of these terrific dancers have to be eliminated. I have really enjoyed this series of Dancing With the Stars.

Any comments? Feel free! Who is your favorite?

My Obsessive Collections on TLC: The Doll Collector

Now I’ve seen everything, Obsessive Collections on TLC. The show I watched features a woman with an extensive shoe collection, a boy who collects and repairs vacuum cleaners, two overly obsessive Dolly Parton fans and a woman who collects real life-like dolls.

The woman who collects life-like dolls impressed me as being the oddest one of tonight’s collectors.  She has tons of dolls, and a whole group that look life-like. She is passionate about the whole thing. She has a doll that looks like a 5-year old that she took to a shoe store . She asked the salesperson to fit the doll with a pair of shoes.

What I did admire was her husband’s support of this odd habit. He actually took a picture of her opening a box of a doll that mimics breathing. She was as excited as if she was giving birth.

He must really love this woman because she spends big bucks on these dolls. About $1,000.00 a piece. Coincidentally, the woman looks a lot like Dolly Parton.

Her kids tolerate the whole thing too. It’s more than a little disturbing. She actually spends time, dressing them, cleaning them up and interacting with them. It makes her feel maternal. Maybe she ought to try volunteering with real kids who need attention.

On the other hand, she is not hurting anyone with this habit, and her family supports her.

I have seen plenty of people who don’t treat their pets like animals, but like their kids. Is this that different?

Okay, I like dolls myself. That’s 2 of my childhood dolls I can’t throw out in the picture. But, I’ve always known they’re not real. (Okay, I posed them in front of the fireplace, and took their picture. It was for an earlier post that you’re welcome to read.)

DWTS Classical Week: It brought me real joy!

Hofball in Wien. Aquarell, 49.8 x 69.3 cm

Hofball in Wien. Aquarell, 49.8 x 69.3 cm (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

This week Dancing With the Stars had classical week. This is exactly what classical music needs. Making  this fabulous music  relevant to today, and that’s what this episode of DWTS did. They also added 18 musicians to the Dancing With the Stars orchestra. Harold Wheeler, the orchestra leader, seemed so happy to be the conductor for the night!

The show opened up with Joshua Bell playing a tune from Vivaldi’ Four Seasons. In case, you aren’t a classical devotee, Bell is one of the best violinists around these days. The professional dancers dressed in really cool 18th century type costumes. It was very artistic.

Katherine Jenkins was the first contestant up, dancing the rhumba to The Canon in D by  Pachabel. wow! style and elegance!  She was wearing a gorgeous grecian urn type costume. The judges love this woman with good reason. She is the most talented dancer, and she is a professional opera singer.

Melissa Gilbert and Max danced the Argentine Tango. They danced a great dance to Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro. Exciting way to bring out the music. The judges thought there were too many lifts. I thought they were wrong, wrong, and wrong!

Jackie Evancho is a young prodigy opera singer. She did an unbelievable job singing Ave Maria  for a Viennese Waltz. William Levy did a masterful job dancing to the song. Not only is he great looking, but he moves in an elegant way.

Roshon Fegan Did a tango. Great job! Carrie Ann gave him a hug. She liked it.

Donald Driver did a  Viennese Waltz. Vittoria Grigolo, an opera singer, sang! Driver has a work ethic, and did a great dance.

Maria  Menounos did a Paso Doble to Montagues and Capulets . It was very dramatic I loved Maria’s gorgeous red dress, and her fangs. (She was a vampire) Wow, Fabulous ! She was convincing vampire! Bruno said, she was  “Queen of the damned was the queen of the night.” PERFECT 30

Jaleel White In the rehearsal Jaleel comes across as a really nice guy. Did a competent Viennese Waltz. I liked it. I A beautiful  song I Made the Most of Loving you. Judges liked the story he conveyed, but not his technique.

They put the dancers on teams to get some extra points for each of them. More Vivaldi for Team Tango. They were up first. They were wearing very cool black and white costumes. It was so entertaining! 27/30 They got 27 points added to their individual scores.

Team Paso They did the Paso Doble. Danced to Carmina Burana  It was dramatic! They had all the muscle men together. They did a neat thing with their capes. It was absolutely beautiful! “Fire and ice,” said Len. 26/30 He had that right. I enjoyed this Dancing With the Stars

Maria was first and Melissa was last! We’ll see who gets the shaft tonight!

Any comments? There must be some devotees of this entertaining program.

A Humorous Update on DWTS Week5

I like to watch “Dancing With the Stars”. I thought I’d give those of you who missed it a birds eye view of what what happened half-way there.  My qualifications: I know what good dancing looks like! Can I dance? Not really.

Jaleel White and Kim Johnson /Samba

Erkel must work out in the gym.  He was showing his six-pack, and wearing an orange outfit. He also moved with skill and rhythm.

I thought he was underrated. Maybe the judges just can’t get the nerdy Erkel out of their minds.

24/ 30

Melissa Gilbert and Maxim/ SALSA

Melissa must be desperate for attention. She’s dancing with a concussion and whiplash. She hit Maxim’s leg last week with her head.  She asked him to put some of the same moves back in the routine. Maybe the concussion affected her common sense.

She was wearing a yellow and pink outfit. He put her between his legs. I hope she doesn’t have to go back to the hospital because he dragged her head on the floor. I’m still rooting for Half-Pint.

Dancing with whiplash and a concussion doesn’t impress these judges.

21/30

Maria Menounos and Derek/Salsa

If only she could change her laugh, I would really be rooting for her. Her costume was really cute. She looked like a Las Vegas dancer with a big head-dress.

She did a really good job. I know this because I didn’t spend the entire time watching Derek.

Derek took off his shirt and kissed her at the end. Carrie Ann thought that was too much.

I don’t know what they have to do to get a 10.

27/30

Katherine Jenkins and Mark/Argentine Tango

While they were rehearsing she hit Mark in his private parts more than once. Did we have to know this?

She was wearing a beautiful pink outfit, and looked gorgeous. She danced with perfection, no doubt about it.

Grumpy Len gave them a 9, but the other two judges gave them 10’s.

29/30

Gavin Degraw and Karina/Samba

They showed Gavin asking for votes at his concert. It’s like he’s trying to cheat.

He was wearing a white outfit and white hat.

He’s a weak dancer. Everyone likes the guy, but he ought to stick to singing and playing the piano. Isn’t that enough for him?

19/30

In the middle of everything, Carlos Santana does his masterful guitar playing.  I think everything he plays sounds the same, but what do I know? Two Dance-Pros did a beautiful Latin dance and showed us how it’s supposed to look.

William Levy and Cheryl/ Argentine Tango

During rehearsal they show that William is all stressed out. He doesn’t want to disappoint his new American fans. He is one hunky cute guy. When he comes out, we’re informed that he had an accident. His ankle is a mess.

His dance is a wow! Sexy and perfect.

Judges say “wow” Of course, grumpy old Len gives him a 9 instead of a 10

29/30

Gladys Knight and Tristan/Samba

Gladys is wearing a way too short green outfit.

Tristan  looked like he was really leading  her around the dance floor. I felt embarrassed for Gladys.

The judges didn’t agree with me. They were kissing up to Gladys. Even Gladys knew it wasn’t so good, but she said she “enjoyed it.”

They showed their true feelings by her score. I got to admire this lady. She ain’t no spring chicken, and I know what that’s like!

22/30

Roshon Fegan and Chelsie/Salsa

Roshon is a Disney star, and dances great. He’s no William Levy and he knows it. He brought in a picture of William Levy to the rehearsal, and asked him how to make sexy moves. It was cute.

He was wearing  all black with a blue shirt.

I knew he was good because I watched him the entire time.

The judges apparently go for hunks because they underrated him.

26/30

Donald Driver and Peta /Angentine Tango

He watches the dance moves on a video screen, and acts like he’s training for a football game. He’s a tough guy, but seems gentle too.

She’s wearing a red dress, and he’s wearing a black outfit with a red shirt.

He’s carrying her around the dance floor like she’s as light as a football. This guy is strong. He is sexy too.

He got a good score, but wasn’t happy with it. I guess they teach those football players to kill and win!

27/30

Update: Gavin had a dance-off with Jaleel in front of the judges. It was a foregone conclusion who would win. Ingratiating yourself with your fans will only get you so far. Congratulations Jaleel.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
